Sept. 18 marked the 55th anniversary of the publication of Columbia University professor Alan Westin’s book “Privacy and Freedom.” A review of the book was written in the Sept. 18, 1967 edition of The New York Times and contained Westin’s warning that “intimate facts about the private lives of many Americans may soon be available to government officials and private institutions at the touch of a computer button.” The IAPP Westin Research Center was established in 2013 in honor of Westin’s contributions to the field of privacy.
