The America's Health Insurance Plans association said a proposal to increase transparency surrounding health care costs poses an increased risk to patient privacy, HealthITSecurity reports. The proposed changes would require insurance plans and hospitals to disclose negotiated rates and insurers to inform patients of costs in real time through an online tool. The AHIP argues the tool’s use of application programming interfaces appears “more targeted at providing data to third party application developers than ensuring consumers have access to meaningful, personalized data.” The association said the Department of Health and Human Services should delay changes until adequate privacy protections are implemented.
