In a letter, a group of advocacy organizations urged Congress to “directly address” the ways in which the use of data can impact people’s civil rights, particularly how it can be used to discriminate in housing, education, employment, insurance and credit opportunities, MediaPost reports. In the letter, the groups wrote, “Commercial data practices that process massive quantities of personal data enable and facilitate discrimination on a systematic scale." Urging that future legislation prioritize and address data's impact on civil rights, the groups called for protections against data's role in voter suppression and called for a private right of action, among other provisions.
