The Wall Street Journal reports the American Civil Liberties Union and Electronic Frontier Foundation petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to hear a case on a right to privacy with user passwords and passcodes. A potential case would settle issues held on whether passwords can be withheld from law enforcement searches under Fifth Amendment rights. State supreme courts in Pennsylvania and New Jersey previously ruled for and against constitutional rights, respectively, in related cases, according to the petition from the ACLU and EFF.
