U.S. Assemblyman Phil Ting, D-Calif., has authored a bill that would ban the use of facial-recognition software on police body cameras throughout the state, the Los Angeles Times reports. Ting was one of 26 California legislators who was incorrectly identified as a criminal in a recent test conducted by the American Civil Liberties Union. Both the ACLU and Ting said the results prove facial-recognition technology is unreliable. “The software clearly is not ready for use in a law enforcement capacity,” Ting said. “These mistakes, we can kind of chuckle at it, but if you get arrested and it’s on your record, it can be hard to get housing, get a job. It has real impacts.” Sponsored by the ACLU, Assembly Bill 1215 needs to pass the Senate before it lands on the governor's desk.
