American Civil Liberties Union’s Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project Technology Fellow Crystal Grant writes states "must craft policies that restrict" the use of newborn genetic screening by police in criminal investigations. The call stems from a recent lawsuit filed in New Jersey in which law enforcement subpoenaed a newborn's blood test to investigate a cold case. In lieu of federal privacy protections, Grant writes states should place limits on the length of time samples are kept and require informed consent "to the use of samples beyond the actual screening."
