According to documents obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the FBI deployed at least 10 flights of surveillance planes equipped with surveillance technology to monitor the riots in Baltimore, MD, earlier this year, Reuters reports. Obtained under Freedom of Information Act filings, logs indicated more than 36 hours of flights—some of them carrying Baltimore police officers—occurred during the protests over the death of Freddie Gray while in police custody. During a Congressional hearing last week, FBI Director James Comey acknowledged the surveillance occurred upon request by local authorities but didn’t provide details on the permissions process.
