Data Privacy Day is celebrated all over the world, from the U.S. to Canada, Israel and 27 countries in the EU. Known as Data Protection Day in Europe, the first holiday was held Jan. 28, 2007, which marked the anniversary of the day the Council of Europe opened the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data back in 1981. In this piece for The Privacy Advisor, Northrop Grumman Corporate Privacy Executive John Kropf, CIPP/E, CIPP/G, CIPP/US, looks back at the history of Data Privacy Day, including when the U.S. and Asian-Pacific region began to observe the holiday and the challenges of observing the day both in the Northern and Southern hemispheres.
