China’s Xinjiang region is testing a facial recognition system on its majority-Muslim population, Bloomberg reports. According to a person familiar with the project, the system is being led by China Electronics Technology Group and targets people who are more than 300 meters beyond designated “safe areas,” which include a person’s house and workplace. The system alerts authorities if a person tracks too far outside a predetermined range so that police can intercept. In 2015, the last time China reported figures on state expenditure, $146 billion was dedicated to domestic security, more than the military budget for the same period. The international community has often criticized China for targeting Xinjiang in many of its surveillance projects.
