An op-ed for the South China Morning Post explores how Hong Kong's "smart" identification cards, produced between 2003 and 2007, fell behind as they aged in an era of technological innovation and how a replacement looks to "future proof" itself. The replacement smart ID cards include a redesign to protect against counterfeiting and feature both a built-in radio frequency, as well as photos capable of supporting facial recognition technology. To ensure protection, the department will employ independent consultants to conduct privacy impact assessments.
