Google announced it is rolling out new kid profiles “to customize your kids’ experience,” according to a Google blog post. Parents will be able to enter a child’s birthdate, and content will be based off the child’s age, meaning younger users will see less text and older users will be able to see more age-appropriate categories. Parents must explicitly consent to the collection of data on their children under the terms and conditions. The new platform, however, is leaving some privacy advocates with concerns. Josh Golin, executive director of the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, said, “Google seems to be setting up consumer profiles for children that may be going into its vast profiling machinery used for advertising.”
