During a House Appropriations Committee hearing, the U.S. Government Accountability Office revealed the Census Bureau is behind in addressing IT and cybersecurity risks ahead of the release of the 2020 census, FedScoop reports. GAO Director of Information Technology and Cybersecurity Nicholas Marinos, CIPP/G, CIPP/US, testified that the bureau is at risk of failing to meet two scheduled deadlines for operational deliveries, including systems related to new address canvassing that the bureau will heavily rely on for census information. In addition to Marinos' testimony, the GAO filed a report with recommendations to put the Census Bureau back on schedule. “The bottom line is that the security assessment efforts conducted by DHS and the bureau itself will only be as valuable as the security fixes that the bureau fully implements,” Marinos said.
