Covington & Burling is pleased to announce the addition of Monika Kuschewsky, CIPP/E, to its data protection practice, further expanding the firm’s global privacy and data security capabilities in Europe. Kuschewsky joins as special counsel resident in Covington’s Brussels office.

A German lawyer with more than 10 years in private practice, Kuschewsky has broad experience in a wide range of data protection matters relevant to global companies. She has a particular focus on international data transfers, outsourcing, HR and direct marketing, as well as multijurisdictional audits and compliance programs. She also advises on the data protection implications of the use of new technologies and practices, such as “Bring Your Own Device,” cloud computing, geolocation services, cookies and social networks.

“With the new EU privacy regulation in the pipeline, clients will need advice on developing additional tools for privacy assessments and audits, breach notifications, processor agreements and various other requirements that will be introduced,” said Henriette Tielemans, co-chair of Covington’s global privacy and data security practice. “Monika’s extensive data protection experience both at a pan-European and German level further strengthens the firm’s capabilities in helping clients navigate these forthcoming rules, many of which have been inspired by German data protection law.”

Kuschewsky received her law degree from the Free University of Berlin and a master of laws from the University of Bristol. She is a member of the Berlin bar in addition to her CIPP/E designation, and is certified as a German data protection officer.
