The European Commission (EC) has claimed, “It would be ‘bad for businesses’ if (it) did not have ‘backstop’ powers to intervene whenever it felt that regulators across the EU were enforcing data protection laws inconsistently,” reports. The EC has issued an explanatory note regarding the enforcement role it would have under the EU’s proposed data protection framework. The EC has “said that there is no way to ‘reconcile’ decisions made by the various data protection authorities based in the trading bloc under the existing regime and said that the role it would perform under the proposed new system would change that,” the report states.
