The Polish Data Protection Authority (GIODO) and the Polish Automotive Industry Association (Polski Zwiazek Przemyslu Motoryzacyjnego, PZPM) have signed the Code of Good Practices on Personal Data Processing. Negotiations on the code started 2010 and it is a rare example of self-regulation of privacy law in Poland.
The PZPM is an association of 50 companies from the automotive sector, including all top car manufacturer brands, and represents the interests of associates in relations with public authorities, including the data protection authority. For the purpose of the negotiations, both the GIODO and the PZPM created a task force to create a list of the most important issues regarding the processing of personal data in the sector and to find a common understanding of privacy law that applies to such issues. The main issues were related to the processing of future customers and the relations between the car manufacturers and dealers.
After the signing of the code, the PZPM declared that it will organise an outreach campaign within the sector to propagate the protection of privacy beyond its members and affiliates.
CMS Cameron McKenna, led by partner Tomasz Koryzma, advised the automotive industry on this deal and represented PZPM in negotiations with the Polish DPA.
