The government is pushing for a plan that would require all applicants for visitor visas, study permits or work permits to submit fingerprints and a photo prior to entry into Canada, reports The Canadian Press. The Canada Border Services Agency would then use the data to verify the identity of the visitor upon entry. A privacy impact assessment was conducted, outlining concerns such as unauthorized use, discrimination and unnecessary retention of the data, and highlighting the need for an appeals process, among others. The agencies involved say they will continue to involve the privacy commissioner in the process, adding that the plan will reduce the chance for fraud and strengthen border security.
