In advance of today's Federal Trade Commission (FTC) workshop on mobile payments, the Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) is raising concerns that mobile payments will "provide more consumer data to more companies" and could weaken privacy laws. CDT Policy Counsel Harley Geiger writes, "Without strong user privacy controls, mobile payment services may turn your cell phone into a magnet for telemarketing, spam and online behavioral advertising." Additionally, Geiger states, mobile services will involve more companies--including mobile payment providers, Internet service providers and third-party apps--than the traditional credit card transaction, adding, "consumers should expect...services to use transaction information to hit consumers with offers, coupons and customized advertising."
