Australia Privacy Commissioner Timothy Pilgrim has declared that the Wentworthville Leagues Club breached National Privacy Principle 2.1 when it disclosed information on a member's gambling habits to his former partner. In 2005, the club was issued a court subpoena to turn over the information to the court, instead it gave the documentation to the former partner--who then shared it with others. The club is required to pay damages of $7,500, issue a written apology and review its training on data handling practices. Pilgrim announced last week that he would be delivering his first determination after facing some criticism for not using his enforcement powers.
