Designed to explore the effects of the digital age, a new institute funded by Google has opened in Germany, The Washington Post reports. Housed at Humboldt University in Berlin, the Institute for Internet and Society will explore Internet privacy, freedom of expression and civil liberties issues. Google will provide the institute with €4.5 million for the next three years. Google Vice President David Drummond said the institute "will be based on a philosophy of openness, open access, standards and an ability to innovation."
