However, opponents have pledged to bring in early legislation to ensure the DNA profiles of innocent people arrested for minor offences would not be retained on the national database, the report states. The DNA register has been criticized on the basis of privacy concerns, and the government is now required to limit the time that DNA samples are stored following a European Court of Human Rights ruling that indefinite retention was illegal.
