Today is Safer Internet Day in Europe and the European Commission (EC) is urging social networking sites to better protect the privacy of minors, reports Earthtimes.org. "I expect all companies to do more," said the outgoing Telecommunications and Media Commissioner Viviane Reding. Twenty companies signed a commission-brokered charter aimed at promoting safer Internet use, the report states. But after a year, only 40 percent have made the "profiles of under-18 users visible only to their friends by default," the EC said in a press release. "The Internet is now vital to our children, and it is the responsibility of all to make it safe," Reding said.
