The federal privacy commissioner's office is investigating the legality of fingerprint and ID scanning at Brisbane nightclubs, the Courier Mail reports. Such scanners are already in use at two establishments, and another club owner plans to deploy them in the future to help reduce alcohol-related violence, the report states. Although Queensland police support use of the technology, the state's information commissioner, Julie Kinross, has expressed concerns about patrons' privacy. "There is near certainty that abuses will occur in respect to licensed premises' extensive library of patrons' personal information," she said. Kinross noted that the government would do well to adopt the NSW naming-and-shaming approach to violence reduction.
