The UK government has approved larger fines for serious breaches of the Data Protection Act, reports OUT-LAW.COM. Pending Parliamentary approval, the Information Commissioner's Office will be able to impose monetary penalties up to £500,000, the report states. The new powers are expected to take effect beginning on April 6. Speaking in support of the request, Information Commissioner Christopher Graham said: "These penalties are designed to act as a deterrent and to promote compliance with the Data Protection Act. I will not hesitate to use these tough new sanctions for the most serious cases where organisations disregard the law."
