Data Protection and Privacy Workshop

More than 60 professionals attended the Data Protection and Privacy Workshop hosted by the IAPP and the Gesellschaft für Datenschutz und Datensicherung (German Association for Data Protection) last month in Strasbourg.

Privacy experts from industry and governments across the world discussed three topics:

  • Security Breach Notification: A Transatlantic Dialogue
  • Enforcement
  • Between a Rock and a Hard Place: Conflicts Between U.S. Discovery Requirements and Government

"From a European point of view, this
workshop was very up to date and highly informative."
— Christoph Klug, German Association for Data Protection and Data Security

Attendees described the session on e-discovery as being particularly stimulating, with animated exchanges among speakers and attendees.

"The discussion underscored the pointed differences that remain between U.S. and EU perceptions (and legal definitions) of what constitutes appropriate information gathering for corporate litigation," said Peter Kosmala, CIPP, of the IAPP.

"If there's one point of agreement, it's that corporate organizations must fend for themselves: court judges (particularly U.S.) and European regulators will simply mandate their own requirements, irrespective of what's affordable or amenable."
