Experts Gather at the IAPP's Practical Privacy Series to Discuss Federal Breach Notification Bills

SC Magazine reporter Frank Washkuch Jr. covered the IAPP's Practical Privacy Series in New York City in June as experts debated whether Congress will approve a comprehensive breach notification bill. Speaking at the Data Breach event on June 27, Milo Cividanes, a Partner at Venable LLP, was quoted in the article as saying it remains uncertain "whether we are going to get legislation out of this Congress, or whether (a notification law) would get bunched in with some other privacy legislation. It is not clear if Congress will bring relief to this area anytime soon."

In related discussion about trends involving breaches, William J. Cook, Chairman of Business Continuity and Security Practices at Wildman Harrold Allen & Dixon LLP, advised attendees to use federal agencies as resources if their organization experiences a breach. He also predicted that customer lawsuits will become more frequent after a security breach, according to the article.

IAPP Delegates Testify Before UK Commons Committee

A recent Computer- world UK writer covered a Commons Home Affairs Committee hearing focused on the "surveillance society" at which IAPP member Randal Gainer, Partner, Davis Wright Tremaine LLP and J. Trevor Hughes, CIPP, Executive Director of the IAPP, gave testimony and took questions during the IAPP Delegate Tour to Europe in June.

The article, which references the appearance of officials from the IAPP, reports that the hearing was part of a continuing inquiry into how commercial companies collect, use and protect customer information. UK Information Commissioner Richard Thomas previously had testified as part of the hearing, calling for his office to be granted new powers to investigate data protection measures.
