We're barely back from our most spectacular conference ever, but our aggressive agenda for 2007 requires that we dig in to duplicate our successes for upcoming events. Before I share with you the details of some exciting new IAPP offerings we have in store for our members, I want to look back briefly at the IAPP Privacy Summit 07 and what made the event so successful.

First and foremost, we would not be thriving as a profession -  and as an association dedicated to serving privacy pros -  if not for the support and confidence of our members. Privacy pros have come to rely on the IAPP as the premier avenue to expand their privacy knowledge and ability to learn from, and network with, their peers who work in diverse industries all around the world. We never take that for granted - and we continually dedicate and challenge ourselves to deliver even greater successes and opportunities for our members. We appreciate all of your feedback on what we did well at the Summit to meet your expectations as well as what we could do better next time.

The Summit provided a nexus to explore the leading and emerging privacy and security issues presently dominating the marketplace and legislative agendas. This fact was evident purely in our attendance alone. With more than 1,100 attendees, speakers and exhibitors, the Summit was the IAPP's largest conference in our 6-year history. Certification provided another concrete measure of success. In Washington, D.C., 225 people sat for one of the IAPP's three certification exams - a 16 percent increase over our previous landmark at the Academy in 2006. And yet another indicator of the importance of IAPP privacy certification in the marketplace was the  number of students who attended one or more of our certification training workshops - a total of 185, which is an 18 percent increase over the 2006 Summit.

So on the heels of those impressive achievements, here are some new offerings we are proud to announce:

  • The IAPP Delegate Tour: Europe. We currently have openings for the IAPP's inaugural delegate tour for members. Join the IAPP as we host an exclusive series of special events in Berlin on June 4, Paris on June 6 and London on June 7. The tour will feature KnowledgeNet meetings, networking events and workshops with leading European data protection officials, including Peter Schaar, Germany's Data Privacy Commissioner and Richard Thomas, the UK's Information Commissioner. The cost to attend is free, but delegates will be responsible for travel and lodging expenses. To inquire about joining the tour, contact Kim MacNeill at

  • The IAPP's Practical Privacy Series. Three events, two days and one city. Save the dates - June 27-28 - for the IAPP's new education forum, which will be held at the City University of New York in the heart of Manhattan. On June 27, attendees can choose in-depth analysis and discussion on data breach followed by a networking reception. The focus of the next day's sessions will be either pharma/healthcare or financial services. Watch the IAPP's Web site and the Daily Dashboard for more programming specifics and registration information.
  • Information Privacy: Official Reference for the Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP), authored by Peter Swire and Sol Bermann. The ultimate privacy desk reference from the IAPP will be offered for sale this month. Watch the IAPP's Daily Dashboard and our Web site for more information on how to purchase this invaluable privacy reference book.

And of course, we want to remind all of you to save the date for the IAPP Privacy Academy 07, Oct. 22-24, in San Francisco. Happy Spring!

J. Trevor Hughes, CIPP
Executive Director, IAPP
