The New York Times reports that more than 1,000 businesses around the U.S. have been infected with similar point-of-sale malware that caused the massive breach of credit and debit card information at Target stores late last year. According to the report, the attacks “are much more pervasive than previously reported.” A full list of affected businesses has not been disclosed. Separately, the U.S. Investigations Service has been breached, exposing the highly sensitive personal data of workers at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Customers and Border Protection Units. The Sony Playstation Network, which was breached in 2011, was hit by a series of attacks over the weekend. Medical records of as many as 500 patients at Cedars-Sinai may have been compromised, and, according to a Tripwire survey, the impact of the Target breach on cybersecurity budgets is diminishing.
