About the IAPP

Sergej H. Katus is partner at Privacy Management Partners, a Data Protection Officer bureau in the Netherlands that supports organizations in the public and private sector.



Katus is an expert in privacy law and knows how to translate legal requirements into balanced solutions. He developed privacy management control frameworks, did privacy audits, conducted privacy impact assessments and is an experienced public/regulatory affairs professional.



Katus was the Data Protection Officer of NS Dutch Railways until 2013. In this capacity he had to deal with a variety of privacy challenges, especially the high profile discussions concerning the OV-chipcard' GÇô the national e-ticketing infrastructure in the Netherlands for trains, busses and metro. Katus emphasized its Privacy by Design-properties and offered practical solutions to further improve the networks' privacy governance.



Katus started his career in 1991 as a research fellow at the Interdisciplinary Center for Law & IT of the University of Leuven (Belgium). In 1998 he became the spokesman on privacy and ICT-security for the Netherlands confederation of industries and employers VNO-NCW. He wrote many articles and book contributions and is co-founder of the magazine Privacy & Practice.
