About the IAPP

Onur Sumer is a senior associate at Hergüner Bilgen Özeke Attorney Partnership, Istanbul. His practice focuses on data protection law and he has extensive experience in privacy issues concerning a wide range of areas, including telecoms and OTT services. Onur advises multinational and local businesses on all kinds of data protection matters including providing strategic guidance to help navigate contemporary privacy issues, leading data protection compliance projects, and assisting foreign businesses in adapting their GDPR compliance programs to Turkish data protection law. Prior to joining the firm, Onur was in-house privacy legal counsel at a well-known telecoms company where he handled the data protection compliance program covering Turkish data protection law and the GDPR. In a global survey published by the Global Data Review in 2019, he was named one of the 20 leading data-focussed in-house counsels. He has a master’s degree from Queen Mary, University of London on Computer and Communications Law, specializing in data protection law. He occasionally speaks at public conferences and delivers workshops on data protection and privacy.
