About the IAPP

Mary Morshed currently is the Information Security Manager for the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), which is the nation’s sixth-largest community-owned electric service provider and the first large California utility to receive more than 20 percent of its energy from renewable resources.  Ms. Morshed has management oversight for  cyber security-related critical infrastructure protection (CIP), cyber security policy and operations, and provides innovative security and privacy solutions for future business-supporting technology strategies.



Prior to that, Ms. Morshed was appointed as the Statewide Risk Management and Privacy Program Manager for the State of California’s Office of Information Security, and oversaw information security and privacy program compliance for approximately 152 California state entities. Ms. Morshed’s career includes over 28 years of public-sector experience, including having served in dual positions as chief information security officer and privacy official for two state agencies, and as the IT Security Manager for the California Public Retirement System (CalPERS.)   



Ms. Morshed earned a Master of Information Management and Systems Degree (MIMS) from the UC Berkeley School of Information, and is a Certified Information Privacy Professional US Government (CIPP/G), Certified Information Privacy Technologist (CIPT), Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM), Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and Certified in Risk and Information Systems Controls (CRISC).
