Technical Lead on Data Protection and Privacy, Watson Platform for Health

Aris Gkoulalas-Divanis is the Technical Lead on Data Protection and Privacy for the IBM Watson Platform for Health. In this position, he is responsible for all privacy-enhancing technologies that become part of the IBM Platform. His duties include leading the design of novel data de-identification and anonymization algorithms to protect IBM customers’ data in accordance with worldwide legislation — including US HIPAA and EU GDPR, as well as supervising a large team of software engineers for the implementation of these algorithms and their integration to the Platform. Dr. Gkoulalas-Divanis is the point of entry for any privacy-related work that targets the IBM Watson Platform for Health, responsible for coordinating the technical work in the area of data privacy for the IBM Watson Health division.



Dr. Gkoulalas-Divanis is an elected member of the IEEE Information Forensics and Security Technical Committee (TIFS-TC) and elected Vice-Chair of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Accredited U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to ISO/PC 317 “Consumer Protection: Privacy-by-Design”, a working group which includes participants from top innovators such as Amazon, Apple, Bank of America, BigID, Cisco, Facebook, Google, IBM, and Microsoft. He is also the founding editor of Springer’s Book Series in Data Privacy, an Information Systems Category Editor of ACM Computing Reviews (CR), an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security (T-IFS), an Associate Editor for Springer’s Knowledge and Information Systems (KAIS), an Associate Editor for Springer’s Distributed and Parallel Databases (DAPD), and an Associate Editor for IGI’s International Journal of R&D Innovation Strategy (IJRDIS). Dr. Gkoulalas-Divanis has published more than 90 research works in the area of privacy, including five Springer books, and has applied for more than 25 patents. He is a regular reviewer for several top-tier journals and serves in the technical program committee of many prestigious conferences. He is a Professional member of ACM, SIAM, AAAS and IAPP, a Senior Member of IEEE, and an at-large member of UPE and Sigma Xi.
